Unveiling ceremony of the old Johannesburg Township General
Plan

21 February 2006

The Johannesburg Deeds Office invites members of the media to the unveiling
ceremony of the Johannesburg Township General Plan, which turns 95-years old
this year. Below is a brief history of the plan:

* The plan was registered and approved by the then Surveyor–General, Mr WK
Tucker in 1911 and was published in the Union Government Gazette No
204/1912.
* On the General Plan, some places have now been expropriated and some streets
in the then Johannesburg were closed; after 1994, some of these places have now
become heritage sites. These include among others: the Constitution Hill –
housing the Constitutional Court, the Old Forte also known as number 4 prison
where many ex-political prisoners were jailed; and the new Nelson Mandela
bridge in the Newtown area.
