J Radebe on taxi violence in Johannesburg

Minister of Transport J Radebe on taxi violence in
Johannesburg

28 May 2007

Minister Jeff Radebe has today described the taxi violence in Johannesburg
as barbarism which must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Speaking
from Zurich, Minister Radebe stated that his department was working closely
with the law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible must be
brought to book and face the full mighty of the law.

He also reiterated the significance of the Taxi Recap Programme as a
solution to destructive competition over profitable routes. He said that the
conversion of radius permits to operating licenses would bring proper
regulation into the taxi industry.

The old system of radius permits did not specify routes to be used by taxi
operators which led to destructive competition and violence. Contrary to this,
operating licences specify the exact route for each operator and would make it
easier for law enforcement agencies to deal with compliance matters within the
taxi industry.

The Operating Licensing Boards (OLBs) received more than 119 000
applications for operating licences and subsequently approved more than 87 000
licences.
