International Non-Motorised and Intermediate Means of Transport
conference and exhibition ends on high note

23 February 2007

Midrand, Johannesburg: Transport Minister, Jeff Radebe hosted the first-ever
Non-Motorised (NMT) and Intermediate Means of Transport (IMT) Conference and
Exhibition from 22 to 23 February 2007 at Gallagher Estate, Midrand,
Gauteng.

Under the theme "Expanding the boundaries of non-motorised and intermediate
means of transport for sustainable livelihoods," delegates at the conference,
comprising provincial transport MECs, local and international experts in the
field and stakeholders, deliberated on key issues regarding non-motorised and
intermediate transportation.

The following are some of the recommendations coming out of the
conference:

* the need for policy and strategy at national level for NMT
* the transformation of Town Planning and road design in a manner that
prioritises NMT
* funding and alignment of strategies by all spheres of government
* change in guidelines for roads designs to prioritise NMT
* addressing security issues to promote NMT
* prioritising rural areas for improved access and mobility
* development of community safety awareness programmes
* local production of bicycles and other NMT technology
* the need for NMT to be integrated with Public Transport Consideration of
animal welfare.

Learners from various provinces became beneficiaries during the conference
as more than 80 bicycles were donated to them at the end of the conference.

The Department has set a target of distributing 1 000 000 (one million)
bicycles throughout the country by 2015 in line with the Millennium Development
Goals as set in Addis Ababa in 2005.
