Theme: Strengthening of Health systems for equity and development in
Africa

What: A press conference on the outcomes of the third African Union
Conference of Ministers of Health.
Why: To inform the media about the outcomes of the third African Union (AU)
Conference of Ministers of Health (CAMH3). The panel will also field questions
from the media.
Date: 13 April
Time: Friday afternoon, after the official closing ceremony
Venue: Sandton Convention Centre; Johannesburg, Committee room 4, fourth
floor

Who: The Chairperson of CAMH3, Honourable Jeff Radebe and Acting Minister of
Health of South Africa will be joined by HE Commissioner Bience Gawanas of the
AU and other ministers on the panel.

Context: African Ministers of Health have been meeting since Tuesday, 9
April 2007 to discuss ways and means of strengthening health systems for equity
and development in Africa and to adopt an Africa Health Strategy. Within the
strategy are issues such as a situation analysis of the health systems in
Africa, strategic directions, integrated approach and linkages, socio economic
and political context of health, monitoring and evaluation and the way
forward.

Among the issues discussed at the conference were: African Traditional
Medicine; Human Resources for Health; Draft Implementation Plan for the Outcome
of the Abuja Special Summit on HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; Draft
Implementation Plan of Action on Violence Prevention and the Pharmaceutical
Manufacturing Plan for Africa.

Participants at the conference were African Union Ministers of Health and
senior officials from the World Health Organisation and other United Nations
agencies, officials from the AU member states, non-government organisations
(NGO) and civil society organisations.

Journalists are welcome to cover the official closing ceremony of the CAMH3,
which starts at 14h30 on the same day.
