West teachers
25 June 2006
Minister of Transport Jeff Radebe has expressed shock and sadness at the
news of the gruesome road accident that took the lives of 14 members of the
teaching fraternity from Diphetogo Primary School in the North West
province.
Condolences go to all the families of the bereaved, their friends and loved
ones and to the teaching fraternity as a whole. Condolences also go to all
members of the community who have lost those they dearly love due to accidents
on the roads
Although our television screens, our radios and newspaper reports bring
scenes of shock and death into our homes much too frequently, it is our mission
to fight this tragedy.
With the schools closed, road users are reminded of their safety as it is at
risk this time of year, with traffic volumes on our road networks set to
increase drastically.
The ministry and department urge traffic law enforcement officers to
intensify their efforts to prevent lawlessness and encourage compliance.
Many accidents happen due to carelessness, misjudgement of traffic,
disobeying traffic rules or alcohol abuse.
Drivers are urged:
* to stay within the speed limit
* not to drive through red traffic lights
Pedestrians are requested:
* To cross at pedestrian crossings whenever possible
* To wear visible clothing
Parents are also urged:
* To be an example to the children by always wearing seatbelts
* To never call children from one side of the road as they might cross without
checking the traffic
Together, let us take the responsibility. Let us all âarrive aliveâ.
