The media is invited to the 3rd Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU)
Conference of Ministers of Health that is aimed at developing the African
Health Strategy.
Background: The main objective of the Conference will be to discuss issues
relating to health in general in Africa and the strengthening of health systems
in the continent. The following are some of the issues to be discussed at the
conference:
* African traditional medicine
* human resources for health
* Draft implementation plan for the outcome of the Abuja Special Summit on
HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria
* Draft implementation plan of action on violence prevention, and
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa.
The main participants at the conference will be African Union Ministers of
Health and senior officials from the World Health Organisation, officials from
the AU member states, non-government organisations and civil society
organisations. One of the key outcomes of the conference is the adoption of the
African Health Strategy.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the conference. The
official opening on 10 April 2007 and the closing on 13 April 2007 are open to
members of the media. Media accreditation is done in terms of the requirements
of the security agencies of the Republic of South Africa given the high-profile
nature of the conference. Accreditation of media representatives is open from
Sunday, 8 April at 08h00 until 16h30, Monday, 9 April from 08h00 until 16h30
and Tuesday from 07h00. Members of the media are advised to present themselves
for accreditation early on both of these days to avoid delays given the
detailed nature of the accreditation process.
Requirements: South African identification (green bar-coded document)
including drivers' licence or passport. Press cards are required for all media
in line with the requirements of the South African Security Agencies'
requirements. Concessions in this regard will not be made.
A media briefing is scheduled for 10 April 2007 at the Convention Centre.
The media briefing will be addressed by the Acting Minister of Health Jeff
Radebe and the AU Commissioner on Social Affairs.
