Deputy Minister to officiate at commemoration of the
International Human Rights Day

The Deputy Minister of Social Development, Dr Jean Swanson-Jacobs will
deliver the keynote address at the commemoration of the International Human
Rights Day, 10 December in Calvinia in the Northern Cape.

The event will focus on older persons under the theme "Challenges and
opportunities of Ageing", embracing the fruits of ageing.

The United Nations has identified five key areas of importance for older
persons:

* independence: opportunities for employment, education, training and
provision of support required to enable older people to live at home from as
long as possible
* participation: an active role in decision making and communicating in the
family, the community and society as a whole
* care: access to health care based on need, society, legal and other services
that enhance personal security
* self-fulfilment: personal development, with access to cultural, spiritual and
recreational resources
* dignity: full human rights, including respect for older person, beliefs,
privacy and security.
