Independent Electoral Commission on results of by-elections

Results by-elections held on 15 November

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mr Norman du Plessis, said in Pretoria today that the African National
Congress (ANC) won four of the six wards contested in the municipal ward
by-elections of 15 November 2006. Of the remaining two wards, one each went to
the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

Voter turnout varied between 13,6 percent and 43,94 percent with an average
of 20,73 percent.

All parties retained their seats.

The new ANC councillors are:

* Elmond Mpho Tlou Lamola in Ward 37 in Tshwane - [Pretoria], Gauteng
* Jeniffer Kelebogile Monareng in ward four in Mafikeng � NW383, North
West
* S'phamandla Christopher Shezi in ward four in Ubuhlebezwe [Ixopo] � KZ5a5,
KwaZulu-Natal
* Fano Bethel Zuma in Ward 16 in Msunduzi [Pietermaritzburg] � KZ225,
KwaZulu-Natal.

Christiaan Wilhelmus Potgieter is the new councillor for the DA in ward
three in George [George] � WC044 in the Western Cape which was an uncontested
ward.

Nokuphila Phiwayinkosi Zulu is the new councillor for the IFP in ward seven
in Nqutu [Nqutu] � KZ242 in KwaZulu-Natal.
