The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Independent Electoral Commission
(IEC), Mr Mosotho Moepya, said in Pretoria today, 7 December that the African
National Congress (ANC) won 11 of the 12 wards contested in the municipal ward
by-elections of 6 December 2006. The remaining ward went to the Democratic
Alliance (DA).
Voter turnout varied between 11,16 percent and 45,04 percent with an average
of 29,19 percent.
Both parties retained their seats.
The new ANC councillors are:
* Mlulami Otto Henge in Ward 9 in EC131; Inxuba Yethemba (Cradock), Eastern
Cape which was uncontested
* Princess Sibongile Shusha in Ward 10 in KZ216; Hibiscus Coast (Port
Shepstone), KwaZulu-Natal
* Siphiwe Petros Nxumalo in Ward 4 in KZ232; Emnambithi/ Ladysmith (Ladysmith),
KwaZulu-Natal
* Nonhlanhla Alzinah Msibi in Ward 27 in KZ252; Newcastle (Newcastle),
KwaZulu-Natal
* Phumlani Bongumusa Zwane in Ward 13 in KZ292; Kwadukuza (Stanger),
KwaZulu-Natal
* Marcus Sifiso Zungu in Ward 20 in ETH; Ethekwini (Durban Metro),
KwaZulu-Natal
* Gaolatlhe Johnson Nkoane in Ward 18 in NW383; Mafikeng (Mafikeng), North
West
* Ntombikayise Gloria Khumalo in Ward 26 in MP307; Govan Mbeki (Highveld
Ridge), Mpumalanga
* Lizzy Elizabeth Nyalungu in Ward 3 in MP322; Mbombela (Nelspruit),
Mpumalanga
* Mshumayeli David Mnisi in Ward 14 in MP322; Mbombela (Nelspruit),
Mpumalanga
* Thompson Nkuna in Ward 4 in NP334; Ba-Phalaborwa (Phalaborwa), Limpopo.
The new DA councillor is:
* Miriam Maria Adriaanse in Ward 23 in WC023; Drakenstein (Paarl), Western
Cape.
