Electoral Commission to host Municipal ward by-elections

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr
Mosotho Moepya said today, 21 November 2007 that municipal ward by-elections
will take place in the Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on Wednesday, 28
November 2007.

A total of 33 candidates will contest eight (8) vacant wards. One (1) is an
independent candidate while the rest represent thirteen (13) political
parties.

In Gauteng, Ward 59 in Tshwane Metro Municipality – TSH will be contested by
Francina Alletta van der Westhuizen of the African Christian Alliance; William
Gladstone Dicks of the African Christian Democratic Party; Benjamin Petrus
Bennito Motukisi Motitswe of the African National Congress; Mandla Goodwin Godi
of the Alliance of Free Democrats; Augusta Prins of the Christian Democratic
Party and Gertruida Magdalena Erasmus of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was
previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the
resignation of the councillor.

In Kwazulu Natal, Ward 2 in uMhlathuze, Richards Bay Municipality – KZN282
will be contested by Ahamed Shaik Dawood of the African National Congress and
Anamalay Moodley of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously
represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the
termination of the councillor's membership from the party.

Altogether six by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga:

* Ward 22 in Govan Mbeki (Highveld Ridge) Municipality – MP307 will be
contested by Vusumuzi Piet Ndlovu of the African Christian Democratic Party,
Zodwa Linah Sethole of the African National Congress; Sana Moses Masombuka of
the Democratic Alliance and Jabula Vincent Ngobese of the Independent
Democrats. The seat was previously held by the African National Congress and
the vacancy occurred due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 1 in Steve Tshwete (Middelburg) Municipality – MP313 will be
contested by Heleen Pretorius of the African Christian Democratic Party; Kweba
Nellah Monareng of the African National Congress and Madoda Gregory Amigo of
the Greater Middelburg Residents Association. The ward was previously
represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the
termination of the councillor's membership from the party.

* Ward 7 in Steve Tshwete (Middelburg) Municipality – MP313 will be
contested by Tebogo Timothy Mokume of the African Christian Democratic Party;
Msanabo Frans Mahlangu of the African National Congress and Josephinah
Nomgcibelo Nkosi of the Greater Middelburg Residents Association. The ward was
previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due
to the termination of the councillor's membership from the party.

* Ward 15 in Steve Tshwete (Middelburg) Municipality – MP313 will be
contested by Hendrik Theodor Swanepoel of the African Christian Democratic
Party; Jerrie Makanya of the African National Congress; Marthinus Joubert of
the Christian Party; Hendrik Frederick Niemann of the Democratic Alliance and
Macimanekazulu Amos Mashiane of the Greater Middelburg Residents Association.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became
vacant due to the termination of the councillor's membership from the
party.

* Ward 24 in Steve Tshwete (Middelburg) Municipality – MP313 will be
contested by Ronald Frederick Mulligan of the African Christian Democratic
Party; Gloria Maseko of the African National Congress and Buti Philemon Phiri
of the Greater Middelburg Residents Association. The ward was previously
represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the
termination of the councillor's membership from the party.

* Ward 20 in Bushbuckridge (Bushbuckridge) Municipality – MP325 will be
contested by Petrus Albert Khoza, an independent candidate; Elkan Mngoni
Nkwamba of the African Christian Democratic Party; Cutberry Robert Mthisi of
the African National Congress; Robert Gideon Chiloane of the African People's
Convention; Russel Masingita Maake of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania and
Elizabeth Mashele of the United Democratic Movement. The ward was previously
represented by an independent councillor and became vacant due to the expulsion
of the councillor by the responsible Member of the Executive Council of
Mpumalanga.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 43 917 voters
are registered in the eight (8) wards (25 voting districts) where by-elections
will be taking place.
