The Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Adv Pansy
Tlakula, said today, 18 September, that the next municipal ward by-elections
will take place on Wednesday, 27 September 2006. The by-elections will take
place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and North West.
A total of 16 candidates, representing seven political parties, will contest
six vacant wards.
Three by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape:
* Ward 3 in Emalahleni (Lady Frere) â EC136 will be contested by Cecil
Hluphekile Bobotyane of the African National Congress (ANC) and Nokuphumla
Eudorah Jwaqa of the United Democratic Movement (UDM)
* Ward 11 in Elundini (Mount Fletcher) â EC141 will be contested by
Novuyolwethu-Mary Sikafungana of the African National Congress and Teboho
William Telile of the United Democratic Movement, while
* Ward 27 in Qaukeni (Flagstaff: Ingquza Hill) â EC153 will be contested by
Tokozile Mavis Maqamela of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP),
Thamsanqa Stanley Vimba of the African National Congress, Magunya Wellcome
Gwebani of the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) of Azania and Nkosiyoxolo
Tshangela of the United Democratic Movement.
In KwaZulu-Natal, the candidates contesting Ward 4 in KwaDukuza (Stanger) â
KZ292 are Vuma Muziwondile Wilberforce Mdluli of the African National Congress
and Bongani Clarence Ndobe of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
Two by-elections will take place in North West:
* Ward 13 in Madibeng (Brits) â NW372 will be contested by Jacob Makopo Modise
of the African Christian Alliance, Refilwe Christina Mabhunga of the African
Christian Democratic Party and Alfred Mokone of the African National Congress
and
* Ward 7 in Merafong City (Carletonville) â NW405 will be contested by
Maletsatsi Maria Silubane of the African Christian Democratic Party, Thabo
Mokapela of the African National Congress and John Mashabela Letsholo of the
Democratic Alliance (DA).
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 24 788 voters
are registered in the six wards (37 voting districts) where by-elections will
be taking place.
