Independent Electoral Commission to hold municipal by-elections, 22

Municipal by-elections scheduled

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC),
Mosotho Moepya, said today (20 August) that municipal ward by-elections will
take place in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and North West on
Wednesday, 22 August 2007.

A total of 32 candidates will contest nine vacant wards. Two are independent
candidates while the rest represent 14 political parties.

In the Eastern Cape, Ward 13 in Mbhashe (Idutywa) Municipality � EC121 will
be contested by Portia Nozipho Nomabhele Benya of the African Christian
Democratic Party, Victor Thandisizwe Stofile of the African National Congress
and Gubela Eric Mpofu of the United Democratic Movement while Ward 13 in
Nyandeni (Libode) Municipality � EC155 will be contested by Mesuli Douglas
Ngqondwana of the African National Congress, Asavela Mbokodi of the Pan
Africanist Congress of Azania and Mpakamiseni Ndaba of the United Democratic
Movement.

Three by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:

Ward 57 in eThekwini (Durban Metro) Municipality � ETH will be contested by
Sizwe Desmond Ndamase, an independent candidate, Vincent Kunju of the African
National Congress, Nomatamsanqa Creasantion Mcaphukiso of the Azanian People's
Organisation, Nokukhanya Jali of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Bukiwe Hombakazi
Gwiliza of the National Democratic Convention.

Ward 5 in Umdoni (Scottburgh) Municipality � KZN212 will be contested by
Dean Verwey of the African Christian Democratic Party, Robert Steven Tomlinson
of the African National Congress, Edwin Victor Baptie of the Democratic
Alliance and Khalelani Virginia Msomi of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Ward 7, also in Umdoni (Scottburgh) Municipality � KZN212 will be contested
by Catherina Hendrina Darby of the African Christian Democratic Party,
Masilamoney Soobramoney Saman of the African National Congress, Russell John
William Meyer of the Democratic Alliance and Dhanabagim Naidoo of the Inkatha
Freedom Party.

There will also be three by-elections in Mpumalanga:

Ward 3 in Govan Mbeki (Highveld Ridge) Municipality � MP307 will be
contested by two candidates: Sipho Antony Makhaye of the African National
Congress and Mafika Mandla Shabalala of the Highveld Resident Concerned Party.
Ward 2 in Thaba Chweu (Sabie) Municipality � MP321 will be contested by Bessie
Dinah Viljoen, an independent candidate, Maphoisa Lucas Mkhabela of the African
National Congress and Jacob Johannes Momberg of the Vryheidsfront Plus. Ward 18
in Nkomazi (Nkomazi) Municipality � MP324 will be contested by two candidates:
Sibongile Nelly Shabangu of the African National Congress and Elliot Gideon
Nyembe of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

In North West, Ward 13 in Madibeng (Brits) Municipality � NW372 will be
contested by Jacob Makopo Modise of the African Christian Alliance, Refilwe
Christina Mabhunga of the African Christian Democratic Party, Jody Sefudi of
the African National Congress, George Kgapela Chijaka of the Independent
Democrats, Michael Stephens Tshele of the United Christian Democratic Party and
Topile Betty Makhubela of the United Independent Front.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 47 171 voters
are registered in the nine wards (46 voting districts) where by-elections will
be taking place.
