The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr
Mosotho Moepya, said in Pretoria today, 1 November, that the African National
Congress won three and the Inkatha Freedom Party two of the five contested
wards in the municipal ward by-elections which took place yesterday.
Voter turnout varied between 31,45 percent and 43,24 percent with an average
of 35,75 percent.
In the four KwaZulu-Natal by-elections, the African National Congress and
the Inkatha Freedom Party each won two wards:
* Ward 6 in Umtshezi (Estcourt) Municipality â KZN234, went to Simon Nyanda
Mchunu while the new councillor in Ward 4 in Nkandla Municipality â KZN286 is
Phakanani Maxwell Khanyile, both of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
* Ward 1 in Umvoti (Greytown) Municipality â KZN245, was won by Sibongiseni
Anthony Nzama and Ward 13 in Umzimkhulu [Umzimkulu] Municipality â KZN435 by
Kayalethu Edgar Tobela, both of the African National Congress.
In North West, the new councillor in Ward 12 in Ramotshere Moiloa [Zeerust]
Municipality â NW385 is Kelebogile Magdeline Lerakong of the African National
Congress.
