The acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Independent Electoral
Commission (IEC), Mr Norman Du Plessis, said today that the registration of a
number of political parties had been cancelled since May this year.
Political parties not represented in a legislative body are obliged to renew
their registration annually otherwise the registration is cancelled. In terms
of section 17 of the Electoral Commission Act, no 51 of 1996, the Electoral
Commission is required to give notice in the Government Gazette of the
cancellation of the registration of such a party.
The cancellation of registration of the following parties appeared in Notice
932 of 2006 in government gazette no. 29015 of 7 July 2006:
Ho�veldrif Inwoners Vereniging (INWO), Feta Kgomo O Sware Motho (FKM),
Alliansie Noord (AN), Independent People�s Forum (INPEFO), Umhlaba Uhlangene
Nabantu Bahlangene (U.U.N.B), Ingwenya Humanist Party (NHP), Witzenberg
Onafhanklike Vereniging (WOV), Pro-Death Penalty, Movement for Economic
Transformation of South Africa (METSA), Ulundi Ratepayers Association (URPA),
New Solidarity Party (NSP) and the Independent African Movement (IAM).
The date of cancellation of registration for these parties was 12 May
2006.
In the same government gazette, notice of the cancellation of the
registration of the New National Party (NNP) was at the request of the party
given in a separate notice, notice 931 of 2006. The date of cancellation of
registration was 3 July 2006.
