Results of first municipal by-elections

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Mr
Norman Du Plessis, said in Pretoria today (8 June) that the African National
Congress has won nine out of the 14 wards contested in the municipal ward
by-elections of the 7th of June 2006. Of the remaining wards, two each went to
the Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party, and one to an independent
candidate. These were the first by-elections after the 2006 Municipal Elections
which took place in March this year.

Voter turnout varied between 15.26 percent and 55.37 percent with an average
of 31.06 percent.

The new African National Congress councillors are -

* Simbongile Mbiyozo in Ward 8 in EC155 – Nyandeni [Libode], Eastern
Cape;

* Pheko Lucas Mofokeng in Ward 41 in GT421 – Emfuleni [Vereeniging],
Gauteng;

* Mapule Mabel Khumalo in Ward 10 in JHB – City of Johannesburg
[Johannesburg], Gauteng;

* Bhekinkosi Siza Cele in Ward 3 in KZ215 – Ezinqoleni [Izinqolweni],
KwaZulu-Natal;

* * Agrippa Thulani Thusi in Ward 6 in KZ221 – Umshwathi [Wartburg],
KwaZulu-Natal;

* Phumphele Walter Mbonambi in Ward 4 in KZ271 – Umhlabuyalingana
[Emangusi], KwaZulu-Natal;

* Bongani Eric Ngcobo in Ward 10 in KZ5A1 – Ingwe [Creighton],
KwaZulu-Natal;

* Thulane Iven Mahlangu in Ward 5 in MP316 – Dr JS Moroka [Mdutjana],
Mpumalanga; and

* Jacob Jappie Garikue in Ward 2 in NW372 – Madibeng [Brits], North
West.

The new councillors in the other two by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal are both
from the Inkatha Freedom Party:

* David Sikhumbuzo Myeza in Ward 38 in ETH – Ethekwini [Durban Metro];
and

* Nelisiwe Judith Mbele in Ward 9 in KZ242 – Nqutu [Nqutu].

The new councillors for the Democratic Alliance are –

* Anna Sophia Grobler in Ward 23 in MP313 – Steve Tshwete [Middelburg],
Mpumalanga, which was previously held by the African National Congress
* Sheval William Percy Arendse in Ward 82 in CPT – City of Cape Town [Cape
Town], Western Cape, which was previously held by the Independent
Democrats.

Tueloetsile Peter Tshipo is the only independent candidate that was elected.
He is the new councillor for Ward 11 in NC451 – Moshaweng [Kgalagadi] in the
Northern Cape, which was previously held by the African National Congress.
