The Chief Electoral Officer of the Electoral Commission (IEC), Adv Pansy
Tlakula, said today (31 October) that municipal ward by-elections will take
place on Wednesday, 15 November 2006. The by-elections will take place in
Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and the Western Cape.
A total of 18 candidates, representing nine (9) political parties, will
contest six (6) vacant wards. One ward is uncontested.
In Gauteng, Ward 37 in Tshwane Metro [Pretoria] â TSH will be contested by
Michael Modise of the African Christian Alliance, Mologane Joseph Mampane of
the African Christian Democratic Party, Elmond Mpho Tlou Lamola of the African
National Congress, Thabo Strike Mothelo of the Pan Africanist Congress of
Azania and Malema Abia Mmotlana of the United Christian Democratic Party.
Three by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal:
* Ward 16 in Msunduzi [Pietermaritzburg] â KZ225 will be contested by Emelaa
Mzila of the African Christian Democratic Party and Fano Bethel Zuma of the
African National Congress
* Ward 7 in Nqutu [Nqutu] â KZ242 will be contested by Bongani Surprise
Chambule of the African National Congress, Nokuphila Phiwayinkosi Zulu of the
Inkatha Freedom Party and Nomusa Happiness Ntuli of the National Democratic
Convention; while
* Ward 4 in Ubuhlebezwe [Ixopo] â KZ5A5 will be contested by SâPhamandla
Christopher Shezi of the African National Congress, Mantombi Portia Sineke of
the Inkatha Freedom Party and Jabulani Nicholas Sikhakhane of the National
Democratic Convention
In North West, the candidates contesting Ward 4 in Mafikeng [Mafikeng] â
NW383 are Bius Neo Dikgomo of the African Christian Democratic Party, Jeniffer
Kelebogile Monareng of the African National Congress, Samuel Motsamai Baby of
the Independent Democrats and Gwanikie Abram Katake of the United Christian
Democratic Party.
In the Western Cape, Ward 3 in George [George] â WC044 is uncontested.
Christiaan Wilhelmus Potgieter of the Democratic Alliance is the only
candidate.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 37 605 voters
are registered in the six wards (28 voting districts) where by-elections will
be taking place.
