IEC on complaint about irregularities in submission of candidate
nomination process

Candidate nomination process: Naledi and Greater Taung
Municipalities

26 January 2006

The Electoral Commission (IEC) received a complaint from the Democratic
Alliance (DA) and the Independent Democrats (ID) to the effect that certain
irregularities occurred in the submission of the nomination of candidates for
the African National Congress (ANC) in the Naledi [Vryburg] Municipality and
the Greater Taung [Reivilo] Municipality. The complaint was that some changes
were made to the lists of the ANC with respect to the proportional
representation (PR) candidates and ward candidates after 17:00 on 19 January
2006.

The Chief Electoral Officer, Adv Pansy Tlakula said, “The IEC investigated
the complaint and alleged irregularities and visited the local offices of the
IEC in Naledi and Greater Taung.”

She said that the IEC compared the lists submitted to the local offices of
the IEC by the authorised representative of the ANC before 17:00 on 19 January
2006 – which was the cut-off time and date stipulated in the Election Timetable
– to what was captured on the candidate nominations system. In the process, the
IEC also verified whether these lists complied with the Municipal Electoral
Act.

In Naledi, where discrepancies were found between the submitted lists and
what was captured on the system, the IEC will rectify the information on the
system. No irregularities were found in Greater Taung. Adv Tlakula further said
that the IEC will release the final list of candidates who qualify to stand in
the 1 March 2006 Municipal Elections on 30 January 2006, as per the Election
Timetable.
