As indicated earlier the big task of counting as well as capturing votes is
proceeding smoothly. By 15h40 today 49 percent voter turnout was recorded.
Already 94 percent of the votes nationally have been captured and are being
audited. The highest turnout thus far has been the Eastern Cape where 56
percent of registered voters cast their votes.
The Chairperson, Dr Brigalia Bam, said that by now 117 of the 283
municipalities and 20 district management areas have been completed, giving us
39 percent of the total to be completed.
So far results in 92 percent of wards, 93 percent of proportional ballots,
and 96 percent of district councils have been counted, captured and
audited.
In the city of Cape Town counting has been completed and the results are now
being audited. In Ethekwini capturing of results has not yet been
completed.
âI have pleasure in announcing that results in the Nelson Mandela Metro have
been completed and will be posted on the screen at the end of this media
briefing,â said Dr Bam.
âWe had hoped to capture 90 percent of results by sunset and our target has
now been exceeded as we stand at 94 percent.â
The results for Merafong city were posted shortly before this
conference.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) would like to express concern at
the low voter turnout.
The results in Merafong pose a challenge to the new council, to restore
confidence in constitutional democracy. The IEC wishes to urge the newly
elected councillors to engage the community of Khutsong in discussions to
ensure consultative democracy is deepened.
