ICD on sentencing of Bethlehem police offer for attempted murder and
murder

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) wishes to inform you that a
police officer, who is stationed at South African Police Service (SAPS)
Bethlehem, Free State, was convicted and sentenced today, 14 February 2006, for
attempted murder and murder in the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court.

The incident, which led to the death of Bony Mlangeni (32), occurred on
Tuesday, 7 October 2004, in Bethlehem where Inspector Phillip Mlangeni (41)
went to his aunt’s place searching for his wife Bony Mlangeni who was in hiding
after obtaining a protection order against him, which resulted from an abusive
relationship. On arrival Insp Mlangeni started shooting towards the house and
as such his wife was shot on her left breast and chest, his aunt Smangele
Mlangeni (52) was also shot on her left hand.

The ICD immediately took charge of the investigation and on finalisation
thereof, forwarded the case docket to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)
with a recommendation that the suspect police officer be prosecuted for
attempted murder and murder. The DPP accepted our recommendation.

Today, Tuesday, 14 February 2006, the Bethlehem Magistrate’s Court convicted
and sentenced Insp Mlangeni for 12 years’ imprisonment for Murder and three
years’ imprisonment for attempted murder, the sentence will run
concurrently.
