ICD on arrest of Police Officer for alleged corrupt
practices

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has arrested a Police Officer
for alleged corrupt practices.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 17 January 2006, in Fourways in Gauteng
Province, where it is alleged that a police officer, stationed at the SAPS
Douglasdale, extorted an amount of R250 from a woman, who was employed as a
cashier at a retail outlet in Fourways. Allegedly the suspect police officer
undertook not to arrest the said woman who was wanted for corruption provided
there is an exchange of money. The woman was suspected of colluding with a
security officer in performing corrupt activities at the retail outlet.

The said suspect police officer is currently held in SAPS Sandton.

The ICD took charge of the investigation immediately and arrested the
officer today, 17 January 2006. He will be charged with corruption and appear
on Wednesday, 18 January 2006, at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court.

The investigation continues.
