ICD on arrest of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Officer for alleged
corrupt practices

Media statement

9 May 2006

The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) has arrested a member of the
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police for alleged corrupt practices.

The incident occurred on Monday, 8 May 2006, in Bonaero Park in Gauteng
Province, where it is alleged that the said officer, extorted an amount of R100
from a motorist who was using his mobile phone while driving within the
magisterial jurisdiction of Germiston. Allegedly the suspect officer undertook
not to issue summons as required by the law provided there is an exchange of
money.

The ICD took charge of the investigation immediately and arrested the
officer on Monday, 8 May 2006. Ms Zandile Prudence Sithole (33) appeared in the
Germiston Magistrates’ Court on the same day and was granted R3000 bail. Her
next appearance will be on Thursday, 8 June 2006, at the same court.

We have recommended to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Management for her
suspension accordingly.

We wish to reiterate that we will not tolerate any involvement of our police
in criminal activities.
