I Mosala on death of J Khanyile

Tribute to Jabu Khanyile

13 November 2006

The death of Jabu Khanyile comes at a time when our country and the arts and
culture sector in particular were still trying to come to terms with the
passing on of Lebo Mathosa. I was aware of Khanyile's ill health but hoped that
he would recover. It was encouraging to see Khanyile continuing to entertain us
despite the pain he felt. He was part of the South African group of musicians
that the Department of Arts and Culture co-ordinated to represent South Africa
during the closing ceremony of the Federation Internationale de Football
Association (FIFA) Soccer World Cup in Germany. What a fighter!

We will remember him as a gifted afro-pop artist who blended traditional
songs with contemporary tempo and style to create unique music that entertained
all of us. He was unwavering in his commitment to preserve our cultural
traditions and yet embrace new ways of making music. Khanyile's career further
illustrated that our local musicians can make a living by offering a uniquely
South African product.

Khanyile was a family man who lived a simple life, despite his fame. I wish
to convey condolences to his family, friends and colleagues who worked with
this proud cultural warrior! Lalani ngengxeba!
