Matsepe–Casaburri to attend high level global discussions on
the future of the postal services

26 April 2006

The Minister of Communications, Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, will be attending
a one day high level roundtable in Berne, Switzerland, on 28 April 2006 hosted
by the Universal Postal Service (UPU), which is an organ of the United Nations
(UN).

Matsepe-Casaburri was requested to give a presentation under the topic, “the
future of national posts” at this event.

The roundtable held at the UPU headquarters will bring together
representatives of governments, CEOs of postal operators, investment banks,
financial journalists, customer organisations and all stakeholders at the
highest level to discuss current issues that will shape the future of the
postal industry.

The discussions will focus on the responses of the postal sector to the
rapid and irrevocable changes in the postal operators’ environment from the
combined effects of the development of new technologies, the opening up of
markets to competition, the globalisation of trade and economies and peoples
growing need for local services.

Whilst major disparities exist between postal operators in terms of
activities and financial resources, they are all preparing to adapt their
organisations and activities; to clarify their relations with government and
regulatory authorities; improve both the quality of the service they offer
their customers, and their financial and economic performance.

South Africa is regarded as an African leader in attempts to adapt to these
new challenges.
