Government delivers to the Central Karoo community

25 October 2006

Prince Albert Municipality - "We have interacted with various communities,
we have held meetings in boardrooms on Izimbizo, now is the time to show that
we have listened and we are now ready to deliver services as needed by the
people of South Africa," said Minister of Communications Dr Ivy
Matsepe-Casaburri as she prepares for one of her major Izimbizo, which she will
host together with the Western Cape Premier, Mr Ebrahim Rasool, in the Western
Cape, Central Karoo on 30 October 2006.

The Imbizo Focus Week, which starts from the 26 to 31 October 2006, is part
of government's intervention on Second Economy issues.

During this Imbizo, Matsepe-Casaburri is expected to launch the Mayibuye
Telecentre as part of the first leg of the Imbizo. This Telecentre will see
people in the Prince Alfred Municipality gaining access to computers, internet,
telephones, a photocopying, printing, and scanning facility, as well as a
faxing facility.

The delivery of this service to this community will emphasise government's
commitment to uplifting the local community and ensuring that Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) are integrated into the services government
rolls out to various communities.

"This could not be launched at any other place, but in this community. This
is a community in which farming and agriculture play a crucial role in the
economy of the area; access to the internet through this centre creates a
window of opportunities for this community to use the internet to sell their
goods," said the Minister.

The second leg of the Imbizo will take place at N G Kerk, where the
Minister, the Premier and other principals that are attending, will be
interacting with approximately 3 000 local community members.

Representatives from all government spheres who will be attending will
engage with the people, primarily on local economic development programmes and
the implementation of their municipality plans as indicated in the Integrated
Development Plan (IDP) and five year plans.
