Gauteng MEC of Public Transport, Roads and Works I Jacobs to
preview High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane implementation on N1

11 October 2006

Officials from the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works,
as well as South African National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral), will make High
Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane presentations to MEC Ignatius Jacobs and the media
tomorrow, Thursday, 12 October 2006.

This will be a precursor to the pilot project that commences from the 23rd
to the 27th of October, with the view to reduce the massive congestion
encountered by road users on the N1 highway between Tshwane and Johannesburg
daily.

Other initiatives currently running on that section of the road include the
recently launched Intelligent Transport System and the construction of an
additional vehicle lane by Sanral.

The department is championing for better use of road space in view of the
success of the motor manufacturing industry, as well as the rapid increase in
the number of vehicles on roads in the province.

Annually October is celebrated as Transport Month, a campaign aimed at
building a broad partnership for the transformation of the transport sector, in
general, and public transport in particular.
