I Jacobs to launch economic opportunities roadshow, 26 Jul

Gauteng brings economic opportunities to Tshwane
residents

25 July 2007

The Gauteng Provincial Government and other stakeholders will on Thursday,
26 July and Friday, 27 July 2007 conduct an economic opportunities roadshow in
Danville in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality area, where the community
will be informed about government services that can help them better access
economic opportunities.

The keynote address at the Economic Opportunities Roadshow will be delivered
by the Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, Ignatius Jacobs, and
several senior government officials, MMCs and councillors will attend the
event.

Details of the roadshow are as follows:
Date: Thursday, 26 June and Friday, 27 July 2007
Time: 10h00
Venue: Lucas van den Berg Community Hall, Danville, Tshwane

The Economic Opportunities Roadshow takes place this month as part of the
annual Gauteng Public Service Week aimed at recognising public servants'
contribution in making Gauteng a better place and to boost service delivery
even further. Presentations will be made by representatives of the Gauteng
Enterprise Propeller, the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, Gauteng Tourism, the Gauteng
Youth Commission, Gauteng Shared Services Centre, Gauteng Department of
Agriculture, Conservation and the Environment, Gauteng Department of Public
Transport, Roads and Works and the Departments of Labour.

The Economic Opportunities Roadshow will include exhibitions, service desks
and information kiosks aimed at giving local residents information on accessing
government services and economic empowerment options. A training workshop on
how to tender for government contracts will be held on Friday.

The roadshow, which has already travelled to Sharpeville, Poortjie, Newclare
and Midvaal this year, is aimed at empowering people with information on income
generating opportunities, tendering, small business support, training, and a
variety of other information that will assist Gauteng residents in benefiting
from economic opportunities in the province.

The roadshows consist of a series of two day events where government and
government agencies talk directly to residents to empower them on improving
their access to the economy. The roadshows are in line with Premier Mbhazima
Shilowa's commitment to promote shared growth and ensure a wider section of
Gauteng's people benefit from the province's economic growth.

As part of its five-year programme, the Gauteng Provincial Government has
committed itself to contribute to halving unemployment and poverty in the
decade leading up to 2014. This entails putting in place measures to stimulate
economic growth. Most importantly, more people, especially those previously
excluded from the mainstream of the economy, need to have the opportunity to
participate in and benefit from Gauteng's sustained economic growth.

Danville is an area in Tshwane with a total population of just over 40 000.
The prevalent languages are English and Afrikaans, but Sotho and Nguni
languages are also spoken in the community. Most of the residents live in
formal housing units and flats, but residents in the Philip Nel Park and
Kalafong Heights settlement are in need of infrastructure for schools, churches
and telecommunications. While unemployment remains a serious challenge in the
area, entrepreneurship is flourishing and there are a number of small
businesses in the area.
