I Jacobs on killing of taxi commuters

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, Ignatius
Jacobs, regarding the killing of taxi commuters

29 May 2007

On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, I would like to send my
sincere condolences to the families who have lost loved ones following the
shooting of taxi commuters at the Bree Street Taxi Rank in the Johannesburg CBD
and in Hendrik Potgieter Road, west of Johannesburg.

In this regard, government would like to condemn, in the strongest possible
terms, any use of violence as a means of settling disputes, including the loss
of life and harm that has been sustained by commuters.

As government we believe that the law must take its course, and the
perpetrators must be arrested and brought to book.

The department continues to work with all stakeholders in the taxi industry
with the view to finalise the conversion of the old Radius Based Taxi Operators
Permits to the new Route Based Operating Licences.

In this regard, the Office of the Provincial Registrar has been seriously
engaging and also mediating between various taxi associations with the
objective of finalising and publishing all taxi routes in the Government
Gazette so as to avoid disputes and conflicts. The department intends
concluding this process as speedily as possible and in the current financial
year.

Government believes that commuters are entitled to travel under conditions
of safety in all public transport modes in the province.
