Home Affairs on media reports of fraudulent IDs

Public urged to report fraudulent identity documents
(IDs)

29 March 2006

The Department of Home Affairs has observed recent media reports on the
production and acquisition of fraudulent identity documents.

We are also aware that these fake documents are unfortunately being used by
criminals to access services in the private sector.

It is our firm view that these fraudulent IDs were not issued by the
Department of Home Affairs. Therefore, the ID numbers or documents being used
are not captured in our national database.

It is also our view, that the illegal production of IDs is a criminal matter
that needs to be clamped down.

We therefore, would like to encourage members of the public including
business to report fraudulent IDs to the nearest South African Police Service
offices. The public can also call the government Anti-Corruption line on 0800
701 701.
