Immigration services at the OR Tambo International Airport are in full
operation today following the deployment of 80 specially trained police
officers to staff passport control as part of the Home Affairs emergency
strategy to deal with the public sector strike.
The police officers were deployed as soon as it became apparent that some
immigration officers may fail to turn up for work today in defiance of the
court interdict prohibiting them from embarking on a strike. Such action has
been deemed unlawful and the normal labour law principle of "no work, no pay"
and disciplinary action will be applied to all the transgressors.
All ports of entry are in full and secure operation for the duration of the
strike. Members of the public are advised that it is business as usual at all
ports of entry.
The Department of Home Affairs regrets any inconvenience that might have
been caused by the illegal action by the immigration officers.
