Couples invited to participate in Valentine's Day Robben Island
marriages

2 February 2007

The Department of Home Affairs invites couples interested in taking part in
this year's edition of Valentine's Day Marriages to be held at the Robben
Island Museum to begin registering for the annual event.

Since the inception of the initiative in 2000, the esteemed World Heritage
Site has been transformed into a romantic rendezvous on Valentine's Day (14
February 2007) by couples from all over the world. Over 120 marriages have been
conducted at the Museum.

This year's episode will be characterised by the first same sex marriage to
be solemnised on the Museum following the passing of the Civil Union Act 2006
(Act No 17 of 2006) which accords same-sex couples the same rights and status
as heterosexual married couples.

Couples wishing to partake are advised to contact Milly Phillips on (021)
462 4994 or Angela Joshua on (021) 465 1183 before 9 February 2007.

Members of the media wishing to cover the event may contact Thabo Mokgola on
(012) 810 7242 or 082 902 8414. The deadline for registration is also 9
February 2007.

Please note: Members of the media are reminded that there are limited seats
on the boat to the Island and remaining tickets will be issued on a first come
first serve basis.
