scheme
23 July 2007
The Department of Home Affairs has noted with grave concern media reports
insinuating that it is involved in a scheme to use Mozambicans for free
labour.
We reject these reports, which are not a true reflection of what transpired
throughout the deportation of the said Mozambicans by the Department in
co-operation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga.
We would like to place it on record that the Department of Home Affairs
acted in accordance with and within, the provisions of the Immigration Act.
When SAPS arrest illegal foreigners, Immigration Officers are informed and they
verify the status of the alleged illegal foreigners.
Should the status of the alleged illegal foreigners be confirmed, a notice
of deportation is served on them and the normal deportation process is
followed.
At no point during the deportation process was the issue of outstanding
payments mentioned to Immigration Officers.
We therefore want to reiterate that Immigration Officers acted within the
guidelines of the Immigration Act.
