Home Affairs on death of Congolese refugee

Statement on the death of a Congolese national at Home Affairs
office

6 July 2006

The Department of Home Affairs wishes to inform members of the public about
the death of a refugee from Congo. This unfortunate incident occurred yesterday
at the Refugee Reception Office in Rossettenville, Gauteng.

Following this development, the Department has taken a decision to clarify
misinformation around the matter.

Firstly, that the Department assisted the deceased before he collapsed.

Since he was on crutches our security officers assisted him through to the
office so he could be helped. The deceased had come to renew his permits at the
office.

Secondly, it should be noted that we followed all the necessary procedures
in trying to assist the person by calling in the paramedics and the South
African Police Service (SAPS).

It should be emphasised that such an incident could have happened anywhere.
This matter should not be used to discredit the Department in anyway. We are
committed to the highest levels of service delivery.

As per protocol the Department is in the process of informing the Congolese
government about the death of its citizen.

Staff members who were exposed to the gruesome occurrence will undergo
counselling.
