Home Affairs on alleged deporting reported in Weekender

Statement on the alleged deported Maputo Development Corridor
(MDC) official

9 June 2007

The Department of Home Affairs note with deep concern the erroneous,
contradictory and grossly inaccurate report headline, "South Africa detained
deports MDC official" on the front page of the Weekender newspaper.

Were it not for the very high esteem in which the Department hold the
Weekender and its sister publication Business Day as essential elements of the
South African media landscape there would be little alternative but to assume
that this fictional work is a malicious attempt to disturb the important effort
South Africa is daily making to assist Zimbabwe in its search for a solution to
its problems which are acceptable to its people.

The fact is simple, Grace Kwinje was not deported as reported by the
Weekender. In fact she was admitted to the country and she is currently in
South Africa.

These facts were well known to the Weekender reporter. He was sent an e-mail
containing this information by the Department's spokesperson, Jacky Mashapu on
Friday.

The quote he attributes to Mashapu is unfortunate and needlessly
mischievous.
