Health on missing medical records' court proceedings

Comment on the outcome of the Johannesburg High Court
proceedings

17 August 2007

The Ministry of Health welcomes the court order directing that the hospital
files of relating to the Health Minister, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang's
admission to Cape Town Medi-Clinic be kept with the third party until the
urgent application to have the documents returned to the Minister is
finalised.

In the meantime, the Sunday Times is not allowed publish any information
contained in these hospital files. The Sunday Times requested a postponement to
prepare for the case. We are encouraged that these documents that were stolen
from the clinic have been retrieved from the Sunday Times. However, we are
concerned that anything could have been tampered with during whatever period
that they have been missing.

We are aware that the Sunday Times is aggrieved by the positive outcomes and
has promised to publish more damaging articles about Dr Tshabalala-Msimang. We
appeal to the people of South Africa not to be misled by these articles which
are part of the newspaper's campaign against Dr Tshabalala-Msimang.
