Health on Hospital Revitalisation Programme

Hospital Revitalisation Programme not suspended by Department
of Health

9 November 2006

The Hospital Revitalisation Programme is critical in the Department of
Health's effort to improve the quality of health service and, contrary to the
media report by the Cape Argus today, it will not be suspended.

The programme currently covers 43 projects (hospitals) in the country. The
Department intended to add another 21 extra hospitals on this programme based
on the bid submitted to Treasury for additional resources.

The budget allocation approved was significantly lower than what was
requested. This has meant that the Department will only implement the currently
approved projects and not add new projects.

There are seven funded projects in the Western Cape which are:

* Vredenburg
* George
* Worcester (Eben Donges)
* Paarl
* Mitchell's Plain
* Khayelitsha
* Valkenburg

The total value of these projects is R191,833 million.
