priorities to reduce the disease burden in the country

The Department of Health will tomorrow, 16 March 2006, convene a National
Health Research Conference, which brings together local and international
experts to discuss priorities for health research in the country.
The Conference, which takes place at the South African Reserve Bank
Conference Centre in Pretoria tomorrow, will be attended by representatives of
the following international organisations: United Nations (UN) agencies, World
Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) and funding
partners: Department for International Development (DFID), United States Agency
for International Development (USAID) and European Union (EU).
South African research organisations will also be represented. They are
Council for Science and Industrial Research (CSIR), Health Systems Trust (HST),
Human Science Research Council (HSRC) and Medical Research Council (MRC).
Minister of Health, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, will deliver a keynote
address, which will be followed by extensive discussion on cost-effective
interventions to reduce the high burden of diseases and to set priorities for
health research in country.
