The North West Department of Public Works has recruited over a hundred
Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) beneficiaries for EPWP Projects in the
Southern Region for the current financial year. According to MEC for the
department, Honourable Howard Yawa, training of beneficiaries in tiling,
painting and carpentry has commenced as the department has set aside R1.4
million towards training and salaries of the beneficiaries.

In line with the department's resolve to make a difference, public
infrastructure maintenance and renovation projects in EPWP mode have already
commenced at the Ventersdorp Road camp, the District Office of the Department
of Transport, Road and Community Safety in Ventersdorp and landscaping at the
Regional Office of the Department of Public Works in Potchefstroom.

The beneficiaries will also receive training in life skills that include
amongst others career guidance, HIV and AIDS and financial management
skills.

“In the last financial year, 5 355 youth participated in the Expanded Public
Works Programme in the province through various projects in their communities.
As a department we created 38 learnership contractors as a contribution towards
deepening youth participation in development. It is encouraging that our young
people have seized opportunities that the age of hope have presented to them
and are acquiring skills in order to participate in the economy and in
community development," says MEC Yawa.
