North West MEC for Public Works, Mr Howard Yawa yesterday announced that his
department is to render technical support to municipalities to enhance
implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). MEC Yawa made the
announcement at the Bophirima Region EPWP Certification Award Function held at
the Public Works Regional Offices in Vryburg.
The announcement follows a meeting the Head of the Department, Mr Obakeng
Mongale, senior managers of the department including EPWP Co-ordinators from
the provincial and national department recently held with all Municipal
Managers across the province.
The technical support includes, among others, assistance with identification
of suitable EPWP projects for implementation, project designing, contract
documentation, streamlining and adaptation of municipal policies and procedures
towards EPWP and the setting of targets for training and job creation.
Speaking at the Certification Awarding function for the 128 beneficiaries
drawn from Taung, Vryburg, Mothibistadt and Ganyesa, MEC Yawa said, "We are of
the view that the technical support will enhance the implementation of EPWP for
us to meet our provincial targets for job creation."
The first seven municipalities to benefit from the technical support are
Bophirima District Municipality, Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality,
Madibeng, Matlosana, Merafong, Moses Kotane and Rustenburg Local
Municipalities.
The event ended on a high note with MEC Yawa officially opening the training
hall for the Public Works Bophirima Regional Office built by some of the
beneficiaries. As the MEC said, "The quality of the building bears testimony of
the high standard of training the beneficiaries received. As skilled entrants
in the construction sector we expect from them in projects that they would be
involved nothing less than quality workmanship showcased here today."
The blissful event was graced by amongst others, the Mayor for the Naledi
Local Municipality Dr Ruth Mompati, Kgosi Lefatshe Mankuroane of the Batlhaping
Ba-Ga Phuduhucwane Traditional Council, Councillors from different
municipalities within the Bophirima Region, representatives of the business
sector, senior government officials and training providers.
