North West MEC for Public Works, Mr Howard Yawa, MPL, says his Department
has spent over R1,3 million for the inspection, service and replacement of
boilers at five hospitals in the Central Region.
MEC Yawa says inspections were conducted and maintenance was done to boilers
at Mafikeng Provincial, Thusong District, General De La Rey, Gelukspan and
Zeerust hospitals. During the process common problems were identified and
rectified.
Over R500 000 was spent at General De La Rey Hospital in Lichtenburg because
the boilers at the hospital were very old. In addition, the Department is
considering refurbishment of two boilers or alternatively purchasing of new
boilers at the hospital.
"Boilers are critical for hospital operations such as sterilisation of
equipment for theatre, generation of steam for cooking and provision of hot
water. We are committed to the implementation of our hospital maintenance plan
as the plan is in line with our resolve to make a difference through improved
service delivery," said MEC Yawa.
