MEC Yawa conveys condolence to Okakanyeng family

3 October 2006

North West MEC for Public Works, Honourable Howard Yawa, has conveyed his
condolences to the family of the late Emmanuel Okakanyeng and welcomed
investigations by the Department of Labour and the South African Police Service
(SAPS) into circumstances surrounding his death, last week Tuesday.

This follows an accident in which the 40 year-old Okakanyeng, an Expanded
Public Works Programme (EPWP) beneficiary, employed by Partikon at the Modimong
EPWP Road Construction site, at Cokonyane village in Taung, was fatally injured
after falling from the mudguard of a tractor he was travelling on.

MEC Yawa has also called on contractors to ensure safety on construction
sites to prevent accidents of this nature. The department is awaiting a report
of the investigations and has in the meantime, in addition to standing on-site
safety and health regulations, instructed the contactor to prohibit passengers
on tractors and pay attention to safe transportation of passengers on
construction vehicles.
