North West MEC for Public Works, Honourable Howard Yawa accompanied by
engineers, architects and quantity surveyors took the Construction Awareness
Campaign to Seleje Secondary School in Madibe Makgabana Village outside
Mafikeng last Friday.
The visit is part of the provincial programme in support of National
Construction Week. The objective of the campaign is to promote the profile and
image of the construction sector among Grade 10 Maths and Science learners.
Exciting presentations by Africon Engineers, EHK Architects and GT Chaane
Quantity Surveyors drew interest from the rural learners. The presentations
focused on the role of different built environment professionals in the
construction process, opportunities and benefits for new entrants in the
sector.
Addressing the learners, MEC Yawa said, âTo meet the shortage of skills for
major capital projects on infrastructure and the developmental needs of the
country, the build and construction sectors need to attract new entrants. I
urge you to opt for the construction professions as career destinations of
choice. The construction sector is an exciting industry with a guaranteed
future. There are no dull moments in the sector as it offers something new
everyday.â
The Provincial Programme for Construction Week was launched by MEC Yawa last
Thursday at the handover of the R8,1 million Father Smangaliso Comprehensive
High School in Winterveldt.
