Government to embark on Imbizo Focus Week, 6 – 13 Apr

Imbizo: Government meets with communities

6 April 2006

Building on last year’s Municipal Imbizo Programme, aligned with Project
Consolidate, as well as eight previous Focus Weeks, all political leaders from
the three spheres of government will meet with communities throughout the
country at different izimbizo events. The National Focus Week, from 6 to 13
April, will intensify interactive communication around local programmes of
action to promote effective and speedy implementation of the Accelerated Shared
Growth Initiative of South Africa (AsgiSA) as well as other government
programmes.

During this week Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and Local Government
representatives will interact with communities to drive integrated government
programmes for better and accelerated delivery (See Focus Week programme at
http://www.info.gov.za).

The Focus Week will signal once more the significance of participatory
democracy and highlight a growing government and community partnership, which
underlies faster local development in municipalities. The Imbizo Focus Week
will be followed by izimbizo by the President and Deputy President. Driven by
government's programme for accelerating development and growth in local
government these izimbizo will pay much attention on helping municipalities to
move faster in finding and implementing strategies to accelerate service
delivery and growth.

Further to this, in promoting government-community partnerships there will
be intensified interaction of government leaders with ward committees and new
local council leaders around action plans to develop local economic programmes,
through Integrated Development Plan (IDPs), and consolidate management of
municipalities for effective implementation of programmes meant to uplift
communities. Stakeholder Izimbizo will also be included in an endeavour to
strengthen interaction of government and community leaders as well as
significant role players in the implementation of programmes intent on
developing communities.
