sector strike
7 June 2007
The security ministers met today and assessed the security situation at
public institutions in the context of the public servants' strike. They noted,
and condemned, the acts of intimidation that had occurred at various places
across the country, including at hospitals and schools, affecting amongst
others health workers and teachers who were not on strike, and disrupting
learning.
The ministers decided to deploy members of the South African Police Service
(SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to hospitals and
schools to ensure the safety of workers and that of learners, patients and the
public.
Government would like to reassure all public servants who wish to go to work
and all members of the public who need to visit public hospitals that they will
be able to do so without fear of intimidation. All public schools will be open
and learners will be able to attend school, as they are expected to do, without
fear of intimidation.
