Government Communicators' Awards

14 November 2006

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) will present the
annual Government Communicators' Awards on Friday, 8 December, at the Castle
Kayalami, Midrand. The Annual Government Communicators' Awards recognises
improved service delivery, innovation and excellence in all three spheres of
government communication.

Ms Johanetta Clark, Deputy Director: Corporate Communication for the Eastern
Cape Department of Health was nominated as one of the Provincial/ Local
Government Finalists for the Ubungcweti Award. Within four months of being
appointed she initiated, implemented and launched Health Radio Service (HRS),
the first simulated radio programme to be utilised by the Eastern Cape
Department of Health. To date 12 monthly editions have been produced and
distributed through Net Wizard to numerous active computer desktops in the
province.

There are two categories in the Government Communicators' Awards. The first
is the Bua Award. Bua means 'to speak' in Tswana. This category caters for
ministerial liaison officers, departmental spokespersons and individual
communicators who have displayed courage, commitment, dedication and discipline
in their work. Entries are judged on the consistency of the messages that
reflect the thinking of government policies, efficient media services that
include professionalism and a courteous approach, promoting the 'Batho Pele'
concept, liaison with internal and external stakeholders and participation in
the GCIS forums.

The second category is known as the Ubungcweti Award. Ubungcweti is the
IsiZulu word for "Excellence." This award recognises excellence in writing,
editorial content, layout, design and also caters for broadcasting. Entries are
judged on layout and design, achieving team effort, promoting multilingualism,
complying with the Editorial Style Guide for Government Communicators,
originality and relevance to the communication environment.

The winner of the main award, the Government Communicator of the Year Award,
is selected from all the finalists. This award recognises excellence in all
areas of government communication and this successful person will have shown
outstanding quality and excellence in the execution of duties.
