GCIS on payment of legal fees for J Zuma

Retraction: Payment of the legal fees for the former Deputy
President: Mr Jacob Zuma

26 October 2006

GCIS would like to clarify government's position regarding the payment of
legal fees for the former Deputy President, Mr Jacob Zuma. Following numerous
media enquiries and further investigation of the matter, GCIS would like to
confirm that an agreement has indeed been reached with the attorneys of the
former Deputy President in line with precedent on these kinds of matters. The
delay in finalising the matter was a result of protracted negotiations on the
extent of the commitment and criteria for payment. These matters have since
been resolved and the Presidency has made a contingency provision for an amount
of R10 million in its budget to cover this risk. No payment has been made at
this stage as no invoice has been received from the attorneys of the former
Deputy President.

We apologise for the incorrect information that was given at the press
conference and for the inconvenience this may have caused.
