On Wednesday, 21 November 2007, the unveiling of a new fleet of metered
taxis that will ferry visitors to the Soccerex exhibition, took place at a
media briefing, under a partnership involving the Gauteng Department of Public
Transport, Roads and Works, and the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts and
Culture and Recreation.
The Metered Taxi Revitalisation Programme was started about two years ago.
Partners to the programme include the newly established Gauteng Provincial
Meter Taxi Council, and Santrade, the trade arm of South African National Taxi
Council (Santaco), as well as municipalities. The taxis will be driven by
graduates of a customer care drivers' programme that was recently completed.
The graduates were sourced from a pool of highly experienced metered taxi
drivers.
These programmes of new metered taxis, that are visibly marked, branded and
are run by official registered operators, will be the official mode of
transport for some of the visitors to Soccerex 2007 which starts on Monday, 26
November to Wednesday, 28 November 2007 at the Sandton Convention Centre.
The Gauteng Metered Taxi Council Chairman, Letlala said: "We are pleased
that the Metered Taxi Revitalisation Programme has made sure that not only do
we have a viable, safer and better managed industry, but that we also begin
reaping the fruits of the 2010 Soccer World Cup Finals."
The branded taxis will also have access to Airports Company South Africa
(Acsa) approved kiosks, jointly run with the Gauteng Tourism Authority, for
arriving international and local Soccerex delegates at the OR Tambo
International Airport. There will also be a taxi kiosk at the Sandton
Convention Centre.
The Metered Taxi Revitalisation Programme will be officially unveiled by MEC
Ignatius Jacobs at a date to be advised.
