for 2010 World Cup

Gauteng welcomes announcement on 2010 provincial stadia

6 February 2006

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation welcomes Deputy
Minister of Sport and Recreation's announcement that three provincial stadia
have been chosen as match venues for FIFA's 2010 Soccer World Cup.

"Our Department will work together with the cities to ensure that the
refurbishments of Soccer City (FNB), Ellis Park and Loftus Versveld are
completed within the Local Organising Committee's timeframes," said the Gauteng
MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Ms Barbara Creecy.

In 2005, Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa established a 2010 Political
Committee comprising the MECs of Sport, Finance, Safety and Transport and
Public Works together with Mayors of Gauteng's cities to co-ordinate 2010
preparations in the province.

The high level Political Committee is also tasked with ensuring that the
Province's support for football contributes to its overall commitment to create
work and halve poverty. "The Gauteng Provincial Government is on track to
develop a province-wide implementation plan that includes aspects such as
safety, transport and logistics," says MEC Creecy. With the announcement of the
provincial match venues we can now conclude this plan said the MEC.
