The Gauteng Department of Social Development will host a workshop to look at
foster care challenges in the province. The workshop will be attended by
critical role players in foster care given the challenges we are facing in our
communities. It is expected to be attended by magistrates, social workers,
social auxiliary workers, representatives from non-governmental organisations
working with children and foster parents.
This event follows a successful Human Rights Day event with foster parents
which were held by the department on Saturday, 24 March 2007.
Gauteng MEC for Social Development Kgaogelo Lekgoro indicated that with the
problems of HIV and AIDS faced by our communities, it was evident that the
number of orphaned and vulnerable children would rapidly increase. He also
highlighted the problems that came as a result of dysfunctional families, which
he said rendered communities dysfunctional. This highlighted the responsibility
played by foster families, which he emphasised should not be done to get foster
care grants but to afford children an opportunity to grow within the
family.
