Gauteng revitalises Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital

Gauteng Health intervenes to speed up revitalisation of Chris
Hani Baragwanath Hospital

22 June 2006

The Gauteng Department of Health has approved a number of interventions to
speed up the revitalisation of Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, strengthen
management and improve service delivery.

The Department today approved the appointment of a transaction advisor to
prepare a public private partnership arrangement that will see the
reconstruction of the hospital proceeding at a faster pace.

The hospital's revitalisation project is the most expensive capital project
to be undertaken by the Department and it is hoped that the once completed the
project will create a much more favourable environment for staff and will
address major difficulties faced by patients.

It is hoped that a public private partnership would reduce time required to
finalise the construction of the hospital and make it much more cost
effective.

The Department has also approved funding for the hospital's transformation
project to improve service delivery in clinical areas.

To give effect to President Thabo Mbeki's call for hospital managers to
given full powers to run the institutions, more authority will be devolved to
the hospital's management team.

The management structure will also be re-organised for the hospital to be
able to function effectively and autonomously to the full extent permitted. The
appointment of the hospital's new chief executive officer will be announced
shortly.

These measures follow the conclusion of a contract with Clinix for use of
the company's Selby Park Clinic to the treat some public patients. This effect
of this arrangement is already being felt at Chris Hani Baragwanath where the
number of medical admissions has now been reduced from an unmanageable 190
patients per day between 100 and 110 patients per day.

They ensure the availability of staff, all hospitals and clinics have been
given the latitude to fill all critical posts in their organisational
structures in the current financial year.

All these measure are intended to bolster initiatives already undertaken by
the Department to recruit and retain all categories of health professionals,
improve the management of health facilities, improve staff morale and the
quality of customer care.
