The Rules Committee of the Gauteng Legislature has recommended to Premier
Mbhazima Shilowa that the current Public Service Commissionerâs term of office
be extended for another five years.
The recommendation was tabled at a special sitting of the legislature
convened by provincial Speaker Richard Mdakane on Tuesday.
The current term of office of Dr Ralph Radebe Mgijima expires on 31 January
and he is expected to commence his new term of office the next day.
Tabling the report, the Chair of Chairs Lindiwe Maseko said the
recommendation was based on Dr Mgijimaâs experience and knowledge of the public
service.
âHe has demonstrated knowledge of all applicable legislation relevant to the
position and functioning of the Commission,â said Maseko.
The committee, however, identified two focus areas for consideration by the
Commissioner upon assumption of his duties. These include enhancing working
relationships with the Provincial Legislature and ensuring effective reporting
to the house as required by the Constitution.
